How to Pack Lamps Safely Step by Step
If you need to pack lamps either for transport or moving, following a simple procedure will help you avoid damage to the item. Follow these easy instructions:
Step 1: Disassemble the Lamp
A lamp should never be packed in its assembled form. Unscrew the upper part called a finial, take off the lampshade, take out the light bulb and unhook the metal structure called a harp. Wrap the bulb in bubble wrap separately and put smaller items into a marked bag or envelope.
Step 2: Attach the Power Cord
Coil the cord at the base of the lamp & secure it with tape or a tie. It is important to wrap the metal prongs of the plug in paper or tuck them into the coil to protect them from scratching the lamp.
Step 3: Wrap the Lamp Base
Wrap the lamp base in two or three layers of small-cell bubble wrap or kraft wrapping paper. Secure the wrapping with tape, making sure that the tape does not contact the lamp but the wrapping paper only.
Step 5: Wrap the Lampshade Individually
Insert the lampshade into another flat box, making sure to keep it upright. Fill the hollow inside of the lampshade with pieces of tissue paper to help it maintain its shape. Do not use a printed newspaper to line the lampshade, since the ink may stain the lampshade fabric.
Step 6: Tape and Label the Box
Tape together all sides of the box by applying tape to it in an "H" position. Write clearly on the outside of the box that the package is fragile, which side should be up and to load only from above.
