Say you've just finished a new candle scent and need 200 boxes for a weekend pop-up. You email four box makers. Every one of them promises "low minimums" and "no plate fees."
So how do you pick? A good digitally printed box manufacturer can show you eight things. These are a truly low minimum, a clear list of fees, proof of color, and a preview before production. It also means in-house making, the right material, honest eco claims and clear shipping. If a maker can't answer all eight in plain words, keep looking.
Here's our short verdict. Digital printing is the smart pick for short runs, test batches and boxes with many designs. Offset usually wins for very large orders, exact brand colors on long runs, and heavy luxury finishes. We run both at The Legacy Printing, so we're happy to show you where each one fits.
A good maker gives you straight answers about minimums, fees, color, proofs and shipping before you pay a cent. Use this table as a scorecard when quotes start coming in.
| Check | Question to ask | Good answer | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Minimum order | What's the smallest order you'll print? | A clear number, with the same box quality at any size | "Low minimum," but a big surcharge on small orders |
| 2. Fees | What will I pay besides the boxes? | A full list: plates, dies, artwork, proofs, freight | "No plate fees," but setup or art fees show up later |
| 3. Color | How do you check my brand colors? | They explain CMYK, Pantone and how they manage color | "It'll look just like your screen" |
| 4. Proofs | What will I see before the full run? | A design proof, a 3D rendering, and a printed sample option | Only a flat PDF, then straight to production |
| 5. In-house making | Who prints and cuts my boxes? | "We do, in our own plant" | Vague answers about "partners" |
| 6. Material and finish | Which board and finish fit my product? | They ask about weight, shipping and use | They push one material for everything |
| 7. Eco claims | What exactly makes this box eco-friendly? | Recycled-content percentage or a certificate number | Only words like "green" or "earth-friendly" |
| 8. Shipping and support | What does delivery cost, and who do I call? | Clear freight terms and a real person to reach | Freight added at checkout, slow replies |
Digital fits small brands launching a product and e-commerce shops testing a new box. It also suits anyone selling several scents, flavors or shades. You can order short run custom boxes without paying for plates. Planning a very large run of one design with a strict brand color? Ask about offset too.
Neither method wins every time. Digital is better for small and medium runs and frequent design changes. Offset is better for big runs, steady color across thousands of boxes, and specialty finishes.
Let's start with three quick terms. Digital printing prints straight from a computer file onto the board, with no plates. Offset (litho) printing uses metal plates and rollers, so setup takes longer. Flexo printing uses flexible plates and is common on brown shipping boxes with simple one-color logos.
| Factor | Digital | Offset (litho) | Flexo |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it prints | Straight from the file | Metal plates and rollers | Flexible plates |
| Setup | No plate setup | Plates made for each design | Plates made for each design |
| Best run size | Short and medium runs | Large runs | Large runs of simple shipping boxes |
| Color | Full color (CMYK); good for photos | CMYK plus exact Pantone inks | Usually a few simple spot colors |
| Design changes | Easy, even box to box | New plates for each change | New plates for each change |
| Finishes | Lamination works well; ask about foil and emboss | Strong choice for foil, emboss, spot UV | Limited |
| Cost level, small orders | Low (no plate cost) | High per box | High per box |
| Best for | Launches, tests, many SKUs | Big runs, luxury looks | Plain shippers |
Digital is still a small slice of packaging print, but it's growing. Smithers estimates digital made up just 1.1% of global packaging print volume in 2024, yet 3.9% of its value (Packaging Europe on Smithers forecast). Across all print, Smithers forecasts digital value to grow about 4.8% a year from 2024 to 2029, versus about 1.4% for sheetfed litho. It also points to new digital presses built for corrugated board and folding cartons (Smithers research on offset to digital print).

What to Check Before You Order
A truly low minimum is a clear number with no hidden penalty for ordering small. Get it in writing.
MOQ means minimum order quantity: the smallest number of boxes a maker will print in one order. Some makers advertise low minimum custom boxes, then charge a much higher price per box below a certain count. That isn't always wrong, but you deserve to know up front.
At The Legacy Printing, the minimum order is as low as 50 pieces. That covers a pop-up, a test launch or a first round of samples for retailers. Ask for quotes at two or three quantities, so you can see how the price per box changes as you grow.
Digital printing doesn't use print plates, so a plate fee shouldn't appear. But plates are only one possible cost, so read every line on the quote.
A print plate is the sheet that carries your image in offset or flexo printing. A cutting die is a metal blade shape that cuts out the box outline. Die charges vary a lot from maker to maker, so ask directly.
When you compare custom printed boxes with no plate charges, also ask about:
Our answer is simple: no die and plate charges. Our team prepares print-ready artwork with free graphic design support. And shipping is free to any address in the USA, with no hidden freight costs.
A serious maker explains how they match your colors, then shows you a printed result. A screen and a box never show color in exactly the same way.
CMYK is four inks (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) that mix to make most colors. A Pantone (PMS) color is a numbered, pre-mixed ink for logos that must match every time. Each press also has a color gamut, the range of colors it can make. Some bright oranges, greens and neons fall outside the CMYK range.
Ask whether the maker uses ICC profiles. These are settings that help screen colors and printed colors look alike. You can also ask if they measure Delta E (ΔE), a score for how far a printed color is from the target. Lower means closer.
Our sample kits come in 1 color, 2 colors, 4 colors (CMYK) and custom Pantone. If your brand color is strict, choose the Pantone option and see it on real board.
You should always see your box before production starts. Good makers offer more than one kind of preview, because each one catches different problems.
| Proof type | What it shows | What it can't show | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen proof (flat PDF) | Layout, spelling, placement on the dieline | Real color, feel, folds | Catching text errors |
| 3D rendering | The finished box shape with your art | Exact color and texture | Checking how panels line up |
| Printed sample | Real color, board, finish and folds | Very little | Color-critical brands and new materials |
Some digital shops can print a full-color proof on the exact board you ordered, so you can see and feel the box first. With us, you get a free design proof and a digital 3D rendering before anything goes to print. Want something to hold? We follow up on sample kit requests within 2 hours, and kits ship within days.
Pick a maker that prints and cuts your boxes in its own plant. When work gets passed to another shop, you lose control over timing and quality.
Some sellers are really brokers. They take your order and send it to a factory you never speak to. For example, if a color looks off, the fix takes longer because your message passes through more people.
Ask these questions:
We manufacture in-house, with no subcontracting. So when you call us, you're talking to the people who actually make your boxes.
The right board depends on your product's weight, how it travels and where it's sold. A good maker asks about all three before quoting.
One honest limit: digital works best on standard paper, lighter cardstock and thinner boards. Offset handles specialty papers and thick board better. That's exactly why we offer both.
Matte and gloss lamination (a thin protective coating) work well on digital boxes. Spot UV adds shine to chosen areas, foil adds a metal look, and embossing raises part of the design. For those three, ask how the maker handles them on a digital run. For heavy luxury finishes on large orders, offset is often stronger.
An honest eco claim is specific, like a recycled-content percentage or a certificate number. Vague words like "green" don't tell you much.
The FTC Green Guides summary sets out US rules of thumb. A box made partly from recycled material should say how much, such as "made from 30% recycled material." A "recyclable" claim should be qualified if recycling isn't available to at least 60 percent of the people or communities where the box is sold. And broad claims like "green" can mislead when nothing backs them up.
FSC chain of custody is a certification showing a company has processes to make and sell FSC-certified products. The box maker must hold that certificate itself, as the FSC paper and packaging page explains. So ask for the certificate number. FSC is about where the fiber came from. On its own, it doesn't mean the box is recycled or recyclable.
We offer kraft paper and recycled cardboard in almost every category, at no extra premium. Browse our eco-friendly boxes to see the options.

Most disappointing box orders come down to a few avoidable slips. Watch for these:
Send the same details to every maker, so you can compare quotes fairly. Include:
One last point. Printing names or codes on each box may mean sharing a customer list. Ask any custom digitally printed box manufacturer how they store your artwork and data, and when they delete it.
It's a box printed straight from a computer file, with no print plates. The art goes right onto the board, which makes small orders and design changes much easier.
It depends on the maker. At The Legacy Printing, it's as low as 50 pieces. Always ask whether small orders carry a higher price per box.
Usually, yes. Digital has no plate setup, so you don't pay for plates on a small order. On very large runs, offset can cost less per box.
Digital printing doesn't need plates, so there's no plate cost to pass on. Die charges vary by maker. We charge no die and plate fees at all.
Many Pantone colors can be matched closely, but not all of them. Some bright shades fall outside the CMYK range. Ask for a printed sample with a custom Pantone option to check your exact color.
It can, mostly where dark, heavy ink runs along a crease. Ask the maker how they score and coat folds, then check the folds on a printed sample.
Yes. We provide a design proof and a 3D rendering before production, and you can request a sample kit. We follow up on sample requests within 2 hours.
The right digitally printed box manufacturer for you is the one that passes all eight checks in writing. Use the scorecard above, send every maker the same details, and see your box before you pay for the full run.
